Introduction

Every one of us views the world around us through the “lens” of our perceptions. The challenge is, our lenses are distorted by that unique combination of factors that make us who we are and the context we are in at a given moment.

We can make false assumptions about others, or misinterpret what they do or say. These distortions in our perceptions are called “biases”. They impact how we perceive data, perceive others, and perceive ourselves.

In this course, we’ll focus on:

  • Raising awareness of our perceptions - and how they influence how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us.
  • Testing our perceptions - to check where we may be seeing something wrong, or missing something entirely.
  • Adjusting our perceptions - to expand our view and make corrections where needed.

This topic has profound implications not only in terms of data, information and decision-making, but for deep-seated societal challenges like racism, sexism and every other -ism.
